Poland - Richard Ames, 91, of Poland, died Wednesday afternoon, March 25, 2015 at the Greenbriar.
Richard, affectionately known as Dick, was born March 6, 1924 in Greenville, IL, a son of Richard and Gertrude Wise Ames. He was raised by his grandparents, Arthur and Harriet Wise in Greenville.
After graduating from Greenville High School, Dick joined the Army Air Corp in 1943. Dick was assigned to the Hundredth Bomb Group known as "the Bloody Hundredth." He served as co-pilot on a B-17 and flew 33 missions. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Air Medal as well as awards from the Polish Home Army and the Warsaw Uprising.
After the War, Dick attended the University of Illinois where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Ceramic Engineering, where he met the love of his life, his wife Judy. He was employed at US Steel and retired from Kaiser Refractories.
An active member of the community of Poland, Dick served as Zoning Administrator from 1992 until 2013, Village Town Council from 1988 until 1991, and the Poland Board of Education from 1971 until 1978. In 2013 Dick served as Grand Marshal of the Memorial Day Parade.
Dick leaves his wife, the former Judith Van Dyke, whom he married September 1, 1946; two sons, Richard Ames, Jr. of Poland and John (Sharon) Ames of Loveland, OH; one daughter, Barbara (Patrick) Devine of Davidson, NC; six grandchildren, Ashley (Aaron) Dylenski of New York, NY, Taylor (Carli) Ames of Columbus, James Devine of Louisville, KY, Rachael Ames of Poland, Ella Ames of Cincinnati, and Margaret Devine of Davidson, NC; and one great-grandson, Henry Ames of Columbus.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, 3:00 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland with Dr.Robert Hoover officiating.
Friends will be received Sunday from 12:00 PM to 2:45 PM at the Funeral Home.
