Austintown - Rebecca J. Coates, 89, formerly of Struthers, died Wednesday morning, August 6, 2014 at Vista Care Center after an extended illness.
Rebecca was born April 1, 1925 in Irondale, OH, a daughter of Oliver and Ila Brooks McFadden and in 1945 came to this area from East Liverpool. She lived in Struthers for over 50 years until moving to Austintown four years ago.
A 1943 graduate of Salineville High School, Rebecca was a homemaker, taking care of her husband and three children. She later worked as a deli clerk for Giant Eagle in East Palestine and the Market Street location from 1977 until 1984.
Rebecca was a charter member of New Life Assembly, where she served on the Prayer Committee, sang in the choir, and was involved in the children's ministry. In her free time, she always enjoyed a day out shopping.
Rebecca leaves her husband of 68 years, William J. Coates, whom she married September 19, 1945; three children, William (Gerry) Coates Jr. of Canfield, Susan (Richard) Ferrier of Poland and Mark (Cathy) Coates of Palm Coast, FL; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Kristen, Kari, Bill, Brian, Sean, Mark; seventeen great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
In addition to her parents, Rebecca was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Patton and Jude Hardy; and two brothers, Hamilton and Charles McFadden.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Rock, 7025 Luteran Lane, Poland, with Pastor Gary Koerth officiating. Private interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Monday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the church, prior to the service.
