Raymond Schwab

Champion- Raymond E. Schwab, 84, formerly of Struthers, OH and Fort Myers, FL. died August 15, 2014 at the Windsor House of Alzheimer's Disease.

Mr. Schwab was born May 30, 1930 in Struthers, a son of Karl and Margaret Schwab, in which he was raised by his step-father, Bob O'Neil.

He was a 1950 Struthers High School graduate, where he ran track and played football. Ray was a veteran of the United States Army, where he was Sergeant First Class , where he recevied the Combat Infantry Badge in the Korean War from 1951-1953. He also received the Korean Service Medal and the Bronze Campaign Star.

Ray received his undergraduate degree from Newberry College in South Carolina in 1970 and later his graduate from Westminster College in 1977.
He taught at Struthers High School from 1957-1970, where he also was a football and track coach. Ray went to be the Assistant Principal at Jackson-Milton High School, where he was Athletic Director. He finished his teaching career as Principal at Leetonia High School from 1972-1986.

He was a 60 year member F&AM Western Star #21. He was also a member of the Fort Myers Track Club, the Beach Fort Myers Shriners, and the Fort Myers Moose Club. He attended the Church of the Resurrection in Fort Myers, FL.
Ray was one of the founding fathers of the Greater Youngstown and Mahoning Track Clubs and also was a NCAA track official.

His wife, Gertrude "Mickie" Mooney, whom he married, December 27, 1960, died April 27, 1995.

He is survived by his daughter, Lois Jean (Paul) Mooney Carlson of Cortland, OH; a granddaughter, Kristen (Gregg) Matthus of Canton, OH; a grandson, Kevin "KC" (Michelle) Carlson of Fairmont, WV; and four great-grandchildren, Chad and Aaron Matthus; Micah and Marley Carlson; a brother, Don (Edna) Schwab of Clawson, MI; and three sister-in-laws, Clara Schwab of Tuscon, AZ, Arlene Schwab of TX, and Peggy Schwab of Struthers; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, parents, and step-father, Ray was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul , Jerry, Harry, Harold, William "Butch" Schwab; and a granddaughter, Kelly Jo Carlson.

Funeral services will be held at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, OH Monday at 11:00 AM.
Interment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery, with military honors.

Friends will be received Sunday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM and Monday from 10:00-10:45AM at the funeral home.
