Raymond J. Heslen

Austintown- Raymond J. Heslen, 85, formerly of New Middletown, died Friday evening, December 27, 2013 at Briarfield Manor.

Mr. Heslen was born September 18, 1928 in Youngstown, a son of Raymond and Helen Madison Heslen.

A lifelong resident of the area, he was a graduate of The Rayen School. Mr. Heslen worked as an assistant manager for many years at the A&P Grocery Store and later for Nemenz IGA in Struthers.

Mr. Heslen was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War in the First Calvary. He served from January of 1951 until being honorably discharged in March of 1952 with the rank of Private First Class.

He was a member of the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in New Middletown and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus No. 3144. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting trains.

Mr. Heslen is survived by his daughter, Judy (John) Harver of Austintown; four grandchildren, Raymond Heslen and Elizabeth Heslen, both of New Waterford, Marcus Nittoli of Austintown, and Bryant Nittoli of Youngstown; and his former wife and friend, Maryeileen "Marilyn" Taafe Heslen of Boardman.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Raymond "Pat" Heslen; and a sister, Lois Raduga.

A prayer service will be held Thursday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
