PHILIP A. KILPATRICK August 21, 1933 - April 15, 2020
Philip A. "Phil" Kilpatrick, 86, died peacefully on April 15, 2020, at St. Elizabeth Boardman with his wife and children at his side.
Phil was born on August 21, 1933, to E.L. and Harriette (Hogle) in Youngstown. He grew up on Parkcliffe Avenue and attended Sheridan Elementary and Princeton JH before graduating from South High in 1951. It was during high school that Phil met his future wife, Nancy (McKee) and a great love story began. Their first date was at Pioneer Pavillion in Millcreek Park. He later said that he decided that night he would marry Nancy and they were together from that point forward.
Phil and Nancy both attended BGSU and upon his graduation in 1955, Phil went to work for Westfield Insurance Company in LeRoy, Ohio. He and Nancy were married on August 25,
1956, at Foster Memorial Presbyterian Church. Phil then served for the US Navy in Norfolk, Virginia until 1958 at which time he rejoined Westfield Insurance. In 1960, Phil purchased
Mitchell Insurance Agency in Youngstown and later worked with his father at Agler Insurance Company. He took over ownership of Agler by 1967 after his father’s death. He continued his
involvement with Agler until 1978. Phil was the owner of Kilpatrick Insurance Agency beginning in 1978 and received many awards for agency excellence. He then sold the thriving agency to
his son, Phil II, in 1999. He enjoyed being involved day to day in the business and being sur.ounded by colleagues and friends, both young and old, and was a mentor to many. He
maintained an office at the agency and was a vital partner until his death.
Phil was a member of Foster Memorial Church, Pleasant Grove Church and currently Canfield Presbyterian Church. He faithfully served the church as a trustee for many years. He was an
active member and past president of The Four Square Club. He was also an active member of the Torent Board of Directors for many years.
As a young person, he was a talented baseball player and a wonderful musician. He loved his time spent touring and playing clarinet and saxophone with his great friend, Chuck Schafer and
his orchestra. Phil also held a special place in his heart for Lake Erie. Right after WWII, he and his brother along with their dad used wood from their family farm in Warren, Ohio to begin
construction of a family cottage at Madison-On-The-Lake. They worked together and created a gathering place for cherished family memories on the lake where three generations spent time
together. It remained in the family until his father’s death in the late 1960s. Family remained Phil’s passion throughout his life. He was never happier than when the
backyard pool of 50 plus years was full of family. He loved motorhoming and Disney and took his family on countless trips to Orlando, always staying at the resorts and enjoying the parks.
We carry on this tradition today!
He will always be lovingly remembered as a kind and generous person. He was someone who always put others first and genuinely wanted to help. He was an interested listener and a
problem solver--no matter how big or small the problem seemed. He made sure his family wanted for little. He was a wonderful husband, son, father, grandfather, and friend. We will all
find life a bit more tricky to navigate without him with us.
Phil is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nancy (McKee) and three children: Cindy (Mike) Dingeldein of Hamilton, Ohio, Sara (Tony) DeAscentis of Boardman, and Phil II (Kelly) of
Boardman. Eight grandchildren: Emma and Isabel Dingeldein of Hamilton, Ohio, Scott DeAscentis of Boardman, Adam DeAscentis of Long Island City, NY,
Hannah DeAscentis of Boardman, Philip III, Lanny Kate and Keegan Kilpatrick all of Boardman.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Myron.
Due to the pandemic, burial will be private.
The family wishes memorial contributions be made to The Four Square Club Foundation, 110 Southshore Drive, Boardman, 44512.
