Peter J. "Sarg" Vargin, 93, of Struthers, died on Monday, February 9, 2014 at Shepherd of the Valley. He was born in Campbell, on January 21, 1922 to the late, Angelo and Maria Duhmel Vargin.
He was a 1940 graduate of Struthers High School, where he was a member of the Athletics Hall of Fame. He proudly served in the United States Army during WWII, serving in the 101st Airborne Division throughout Europe.
Peter was a member of the Highway Tabernacle and the Struthers Gridiron. He enjoyed gardening, bowling and fishing, and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid fan of Struthers Football, the Cleveland Browns and Indians, and the OSU Buckeyes..
He leaves to cherish his memories, his daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Vince Procopio of Canfield; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Donna Molnar Vargin of Struthers; grandchildren, Vincent (Emily Andrews) Procopio, Daniel (Danielle Howells) Procopio, Peter (Kelly Smith) Vargin and Teresa Vargin; great grandchildren, Ethan and Elisa Procopio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Ann Vargin in 2011; and his siblings, Jennifer, Lou, Mario and Jenny.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11am at Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St Struthers. Burial will follow at St. John Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-7pm and prior to the service from 10-10:45am on Thursday in the funeral home.
The family would like to thank the staff at Shepherd of the Valley for the wonderful care given to Pete.
