Poland Township - Peter J. Sturbi, 85, died Friday evening, July 13, 2018 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center.

Peter was born June 7, 1933 in Youngstown, a son of Joseph and Mary (Sciulli) Sturbi.

Raised in Lowellville, he was a 1951 graduate of Lowellville High School and attended Youngstown College. Mr. Sturbi owned and operated his own black top and paving company, until he later began working in the steel industry. He was employed as a general superintendent for Kaiser-Nelson, Sharon Steel, and International Mill Service until the early 90's. He then worked as a case worker and investigator for numerous years for the Mahoning County Child Support Agency until his retirement.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict with the Military Police and U.S. Army National Pistol Team. For 40 years, he was a member of the American Legion Post 247.

Mr. Sturbi was a member of Holy Family Church in Poland, the Mahoning Valley Olde Car Club, the Knights of Columbus, a charter member of the Poland Historical Society, and a State and County Public Employee member. He was appointed by Governor Celeste to serve on the State Solid Waste Council and was elected to 3 terms, serving 12 years as a Poland Township Trustee. During his terms, he was instrumental in organizing the joint Western Reserve Fire District and later served several years as chairman.

He also served as a Penn Ohio Bike Trail Trustee and Castlo Trustee. Mr. Sturbi was a civilian Deputy Sheriff, held an auctioneer license, and was a certified airplane pilot, volunteering with One Call, which flew cancer patients to their treatments.

A true people person, Peter didn't know a stranger and will always be remembered for his kind nature, generosity, and his willingness to help anyone. "Well done, Dad."

His beloved wife of 62 years, the former Virginia "Jeni" Swedik, whom he married January 7, 1955, preceded him in death on June 13, 2017. He is survived by six daughters, Cheryl (Dan Rivers) Sturbi of Poland, Lori (Steve) Riwniak of Boardman, Karen (Tom) Campana of Poland, Diane (Michael Gasper) Sturbi of Poland, Mari Beth Sturbi of Poland, and Pamela (Bob Fire) Sturbi of Poland; three grandchildren, Kristen (Jeff Babin) Campana of Austintown, Christopher Riwniak of Boardman, and Jeni Riwniak of Boardman; a great-grandchild, Aleah Riwniak; and brother-in-law, Paul Fabian of Canfield.

In addition to his parents and wife, Peter was preceded in death by his two sisters, Frances Harding and Rosetta Harding.

Family and friends will be received on Tuesday 4-7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland.

A prayer service will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery with full military honors.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Mr. Sturbi's name to the American Legion Post 247.
