The family matriarch and our mother, who in all essence embodied in that beautiful word, died Dec. 7, 2008 at Assumption Village. She was born April 1, 1926, the second of five children, at the home of her godmother on Washington Street in Struthers, and lived in âaA"NeboâaA as a child, young adult and new bride. Pearl married that handsome sailor, Jim Novotny, on October 26, 1946, who she met one New Years Eve when he was home on leave from the Navy. She worked numerous jobs in her lifetime, including welding army tank treads at Truscon Steel during World War II as part of the âaA"Greatest Generation.âaA Pearl loved to roam antique shops and filled her home with gathered treasures. She also loved to travel especially enjoying time spent in her late parentâaas (Pasqua and Antonia Malizia) motherland, Pietrafitta, Italy. âaA"Mom we will see you in the working hands of your daughter, son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, as they follow those Italian traditions and customs they have come to value from your example. Through them your legacy will live on.âaA Pearl is survived by two children, Claudia (David) DiRienzo and David (Carol) Novotny. She also leaves nephew, Aldo Cedrone, who she was guardian of; her sister, Elizabeth Cedrone; grandchildren, Stacey (Todd) Downing, Kevin (Karen) DeGenaro, Amber Nolfi, Taylor Novotny; step-grandchildren, Michael (Rose) DiRienzo and Michelle (Jason) Guffey; cherished great-grandchildren, Greer, Quinn, Reese, Lola, Zachary, Bosston, and Addison, who loved their Nona. Besides her parents and husband, Pearl was preceded in death by her sister, Theresa Pasternack; and brothers, Sam and Nunzy Malizia. Pearlâaas family wishes to gratefully acknowledge the superb care and assistance she received at the Hospice House and Assumption Village. They wish that contributions in Pearlâaas memory be sent to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Road, Poland, Ohio 44514. Funeral services will be Saturday, December 13th at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and 10:00 a.m. at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church with Fr. Christopher Burke and Monsignor Alexis Mihalik officiating. Friends may call Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home where the Parastas Panachida will be held at 6:00 p.m. âaA"Remember me, when flowers bloom Early in the spring Remember me on sunny days In the fun that summer brings Remember me in the fall As you walk through the leaves of gold And in the wintertime- In the stories that are told But most of all remember Each day-right from the start I will be forever near For I live within your heartâaA
