Poland - Paula Marie Putarek, 61, of Poland, passed away Wednesday morning, August 13, 2014, at her residence, after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.
Paula was born August 28, 1952 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Paul and Mary Carney First.
Raised in Struthers, Paula was Valedictorian of Struthers High School Class of 1970. She received her Bachelor Degree in Speech, Communication, and English and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mount Union College. She received her Masters in English from Youngstown State University.
Paula taught English and Journalism and was the year book advisor for Springfield Local High School. In her 38 years of teaching, Paula inspired and touched the lives of many students. She retired in 2012.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Gamma Pi Chapter. During her teaching career, Paula received the Walsworth Publishing Award, Gallery of Excellence Award for meeting high Journalistic Standards in High School Publication, and the YWCA Woman of the Year in Education.
Paula leaves her husband, Paul Putarek, whom she married August 9, 1976; one son, Paul Putarek Jr. of Ft. Wayne, IN; two cousins, Ronnie Tomko of Canfield, and Randy McKee of Warren; mother-in-law, Philomena Putarek of Youngstown; brother-in-law, Joseph (Marilyn) Putarek, Jr., of Poland; sisters-in-law, Kathy (Terry) Baun of Austintown and Rosemary (Paul) Bobish of Ft. Wayne, IN; uncles, Michael Prince of Warren and William Borak of Youngstown; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, 10:30 AM at Holy Family Church with Monsignor William Connell officiating. Interment will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main Street, Poland, where a Prayer Service will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM.
