Struthers - Paul Patrick Smaldino, 87, died Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at his residence surrounded by his family.
Mr. Smaldino was born January 21, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of Angelo and Angeline Papparella Smaldino.
He was a 1945 East High School graduate and was owner and operator with his wife Caroline of Smaldino's Family Restaurant in North Lima from 1968-2002. In operating his business, Paul was very generous not turning away anyone who did not have the funds.Paul was a member of St. Charles Church in Boardman. He was also a member of the ROMEO's and enjoyed traveling to Myrtle Beach with family for 20 years. In retirement he enjoyed visiting his friends at Arby's and Panera, and also found great pleasure in watching football and golf. Paul's greatest joy was spoiling his children, grandchildren, and his two great-grandchildren.
Those that knew him would say that Paul always put others above himself. He was one of the most unselfish people you could ever know.
His wife, the former "Sweet Caroline" Nancy Costello, whom he married Nov. 25, 1948, died Sept. 6, 2011.
He will be forever missed by two daughters, Paula (James) Visingardi of Poland and Angela (David) Pasquino of Summerville, SC; a son, Gary (Diane) Smaldino of Boardman; one brother, Phillip Smaldino of Canfield; a nephew and niece, Tex and Nancy Matheney of Struthers; nine grandchildren, Laurie (Jeff) Dieter, Jimmy Visingardi, Ashley (Jason) Metze, Anthony Visingardi, Tom Pavlich, Paul Pavlich, Jenna (Nate) Heddleston, Mathew Smaldino, Mark Smaldino; and two great-grandchildren, Ella Dieter and Aubrey Dieter
Besides his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by three brothers, Frank Smaldino, Angelo DeNicholas, and Joseph DeNicholas.
A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Charles Church, Saturday 10:00 AM with Fr. Philip Rogers officiating. Interment will follow at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received Friday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman and Saturday from 9:00AM-9:45AM at the church.
