Paul C. Melvin, 84 POLAND - There will be services at 11 a.m. Friday at the Poland United Methodist Church for Paul C. Melvin, 84, 6108 Circle Drive in Poland, who died Monday at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Mr. Melvin was born in Pittsburgh, a son of Galbreath and Susanna Wells Melvin. He was a Youngstown area resident for most of his life. Mr. Melvin was vice-president of Ira Thomas Associates, where he supervised day-to-day operations of the agency and developed advertising budgets and plans for various clients. Before coming to Ira Thomas Associates, he worked in various advertising, public relations and marketing positions with the Youngstown Kitchens Division of Mullins Manufacturing in Warren, the former Strouss-Hirschberg department store, and the Central Store. He retired from Ira Thomas Associates in 1984. Although retired, Mr. Melvin continued to operate a marketing and advertising consulting business. Mr. Melvin lectured on advertising agency operations at Youngstown State University. He was a lifetime member of the Business Professional Advertising Association and held a ³Certified Business Communicators² certificate from that organization. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason in the Valley of Youngstown and a member of Poland Masonic Lodge No. 766 F.&A.M., the Sulgrave Masonic Lodge No. 696 F.&A.M., and a member of the Poland Masonic Breakfast Club. Mr. Melvin was a WWII veteran and served in the United States Coast Guard. He was active in the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church, was a lay preacher, and a member of Poland United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir. His wife, the former Catherine N. (Kay) Freed, whom he married June 24, 1945, died Nov. 28, 1993. He leaves four children, Richard, Bradley, Randall and Pamela, all from the Youngstown area; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m., and Friday from 9:00 AM until 10:45 AM at the church.
