Paul E. McCarthy

Lowellville - Paul E. McCarthy, 96, died Thursday afternoon, August 3, 2017 at Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House.

Paul was born June 14, 1921 in Hubbard, a son of Michael and Nora Brown McCarthy.

Raised in Youngstown, he was a 1939 graduate of South High School and enlisted in the Merchant Marines after graduation. In October of 1942, he was called to active duty in the United States Navy and served during World War II. After his discharge in February of 1946, Mr. McCarthy returned to the area and began studies at Kent State University, graduating summa cum laude in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in biology. He first worked as a pharmaceutical salesman and then for Youngstown Sheet & Tube/LTV Steel in Property Protection, retiring at age 70.

He was a member of the United Steelworkers of American Local Union 2163 and Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville.

Some of Paul's favorite interests included watching sports, especially collegiate teams and the Cleveland Indians and Browns, exercising and jogging the trails at the Mahoning Sportman's Club, and gardening. Paul particularly loved growing strawberries and making jam alongside his wife, Jean. It was a tradition he passed down to his granddaughters and he enjoyed making the jam with them into his 90's.

Mr. McCarthy will always be remembered as a dedicated family man and immensely enjoyed keeping in touch and visiting with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

His wife, the former Jean Meehan, whom he married December 26, 1950, preceded him in death on October 26, 2007. Paul, along with two of his brothers, each married a Meehan sister.

He is survived by his daughter, Jean (Martin) Kamensky of Lowellville; two sons, Kevin F. McCarthy of Lowellville and Paul M. (Mary) McCarthy of Alliance; six grandchildren, Kylene Rose Kamensky, Janine Marie Kamensky, Erin (Matt) Zelina, Kevin Michael McCarthy, Amy Jean (Rocco) Nolfi, and Kaitlin Johanna McCarthy; two step-grandchildren, Linda (Rich) Chapman and Cristina Witzel; five great-grandchildren, Julia Stinchcomb, Lia, Rocco, and Marco Nolfi, and Zachary Zelina; a step-great grandchild, Jacob Witzel-McConkey; and he was expecting his sixth great-grandchild this month.

In addition to his parents and wife, Paul was preceded in death by four brothers, Leo, Francis, John, and Tom McCarthy; and his sister, Genevieve Grimm.

A prayer service will be held on Monday, August 7, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 244 McGill St., Lowellville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church with Fr. Larry Frient officiating. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery.

Family and friends will be received on Sunday, August 6, 2017 from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family suggests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mr. McCarthy's name to Our Community Kitchen, 551 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44502 or to Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514.

Mr. McCarthy's family would like to express their appreciation and thank Drs. Mihok and Nallapaneni and their staffs, Hospice of the Valley, and his caregivers with TVC Home Health, who took care of him for the last 11 months.
