Berlin Center - Paul D. Houlette, 97, formerly of Youngstown and Austintown, died early Wednesday morning, June 8, 2016 at his home.
Paul was born November 5, 1918 in New Castle, PA, a son of Clifford and Ellen Carney Houlette, and came to the Youngstown area as a child.
A 1936 graduate of The Rayen School, Mr. Houlette worked as an inspector for U.S. Steel. for over 41 years, retiring in 1980.
Paul proudly served in the United States Army during World War II from October of 1941 until his honorable discharge in August of 1945 with the rank of Private First Class. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 5 Bronze Stars. Last year, Paul visited France with his daughter and son-in-law and had the opportunity to visit many of the places he fought during the war, including Normandy.
He was a member of the Mahoning United Methodist Church. In his free time, he enjoyed horse racing and playing golf. He was a member of the U.S. Steel Golf League for many years and enjoyed the many friendships he made while golfing with the league.
His wife, the former Mary E. Sipe, whom he married on February 25, 1943, preceded him in death on July 21, 2009. Paul is survived by his daughter, Carolyn (Arley) Edgell of Berlin Center, with whom he made his home; three grandchildren, Rick (Amy) Brown of Florida, Jamie (Kevin) Harney of Streetsboro, and Joanne (Chris) Quesenberry of Streetsboro; and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, John, and William Houlette.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Interment will be at Pineview Memorial Park, Warren.
