Poland - Paul M. Carney, 68, of Poland died Friday, September 28, 2007 at his residence. Mr. Carney was born August 10, 1939 in Youngstown, a son of Paul and Katherine Samuels Carney. He attended Ursuline and Rayen High Schools and at the age of sixteen joined the United States Army. He served three years and was then transferred to United States Army Reserve, Ohio Sector. While serving in the Army, he received his GED in 1956. Mr. Carney was the Founder and President of Carney Plastics Inc. in Youngstown. He was a chairman on the Education Committee of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, a former President of Optimist Club, and he served on the Board of Nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Mr. Carney was associated with the VINDICATOR Spelling Bee and the 2007 Spelling Bee was dedicated in his honor. He also enjoyed writing poetry and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Carney leaves his wife, the former Norma Jean Rorick, whom he married November 22, 1974; two daughters, Kim (Ed) Kossick of Cortland and Dr. Jamie (David Shannon) Carney of Auburn, AL; four sons, Paul Carney of Denver, CO, Sean (Cathi) Carney of Columbiana, Mark (Karen) Smith of Felixstowe, England, and Scott (Marlene) Smith of Sewickley, PA; one sister, Donnelda Carney of Florida; two brothers, Richard Carney of Florida and Gerald Carney of Arizona; fifteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Mr. Carney was preceded in death by his daughter, Colleen Carney. Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 6, 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, New Middletown where friends will be received from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment will be in Lake Park Cemetery, Youngstown. Friends will be received 5-8 p.m, Friday at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland.
