Orazio Nunzio Merlo

Orazio Nunzio Merlo, 82, died suddenly at his home on Sunday morning, September 6, 2015. Orazio was born on August 14, 1933 in Gioiosa Marea, Sicily, son of the late, Natale and Barbita Maria Merlo.

He immigrated to the United States and settled in Niles in 1951. He has resided in Columbiana for the last 17 years. Mr. Merlo proudly served in the United States Army from 1953-1955. He was employed with US Steel for 30 years, retiring as a foreman in 1980. Orazio was a member of The Sons of Italy and St. Jude Catholic Church in Columbiana. He had a passion for gardening and enjoyed cooking, taking care of his cat "Patch" and spending time with his family.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Mary Lizzi Merlo, whom he married on October 5, 1974; two sons, Mark (Cindy) Merlo of Columbiana and Brian Nunzio (Lori) Merlo of Columbus, OH; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his brother, Carlo Merlo of Sicily and many cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Pete and Rosario Merlo.

Prayer services will begin on Friday at 10am at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St. Boardman, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11am at St. Jude Catholic Church, 180 7th St. Columbiana with the Rev. Fr. Christopher Cicero as Celebrant. Interment will follow in Pineview Memorial Gardens. Friends may call on Thursday from 4-7pm at the funeral home.
