POLAND - Norma E. Allen, 86, died at St. Ann¹s Hospital in Westerville on
Jan. 4, 2014.
Miss Allen was a lifelong resident of Poland and since 2008 has been a
resident of Worthington Christian Village Independent Living in Columbus.
Norma was born Feb. 26, 1927, in Youngstown, a daughter of S. Reese and
Laura Pifer Allen.
She was a 1945 graduate of Struthers High School, graduating valedictorian
of her class. She furthered her education at the College of Wooster,
receiving a bachelors of arts in 1948 and her master¹s degree from Case
Western Reserve University in Library Science in 1952.
Miss Allen worked for 31 years for the Public Library of Youngstown and
Mahoning County. She retired on Dec. 31, 1985, as the Head of the Main
Library and Coordinator of Adult Work. During her employment with the
library, she also served as the head of the Science Department from 1963
until 1980 and headed the Readers¹ Assistant Department.
Prior to her employment with the library, Miss Allen was a Spanish teacher
with the Medina County School System in Brunswick and also served as an
assistant librarian at the Case Western Reserve University School of
Medicine Library.
Miss Allen was a lifelong member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Boardman and the Eastern Star Miriam Chapter No. 278. Her hobbies included
reading, knitting, cross-stitching, and doing puzzles.
Miss Allen is survived by her niece and caregiver, Ann Istvan of
Westerville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Elinor
Olson, and her brother, Robert Allen, also of Poland.
Per Norma¹s wishes, there were no calling hours or services. Interment was
at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman.
Miss Allen requested that any memorial tributes take the form of
