Nicholas C. Proia, 82 Nicholas C. Proia passed away peacefully at the Assumption Village on May 7 after a long illness. A Syracuse, New York native, he moved to Ohio in 1987 with his wife Ann. Dr. Proia was born April 7, 1922 to Paul Proia and Caroline Cardoza. He served his country during World War II stationed with the U.S Army Air Corps in Naples, Italy where he was a pilot. Upon returning home, Dr. Proia graduated from the State University of New York and Syracuse University. He held a Masterâa�a��s Degree in Education and a Doctorate in Philosophy. He retired from the State University system in 1984 as a Full Professor Emeritus and Dean. Dr. Proia served as a consultant to the State Department under Atty. General John Mitchell in the 1970âa�a��s designing and implementing the Federal programs for College financial aid. He authored a series of reference publications for Barronâa�a��s Educational Series that remain in use today. In 1984, Dr. Proia received the first Chancellorâa�a��s Award for Administrative Excellence from the State University of New York. He was preceded in death by his son Nicholas Jr., his older brother, Mario, and is survived by his wife, Ann, son, Dr. Nicholas, daughter-in-law Tammy, two grandchildren, Olivia Ann and Angela Marie all of Poland, Ohio and three sisters Cynthia Maio of Rochester, N.Y., Pauline Norman of Fort Myers, Fla. and Dorothy Paglia of Syracuse, N.Y. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be in Syracuse, N.Y. Funeral services provided by Becker-Cunningham of Poland.
