Pollyanna R. Ketchem, 95
YOUNGSTOWN - Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Gibson Heights 2nd Presbyterian Church for Pollyanna R. Ketchem, 95, who passed away Monday afternoon at her home.
Mrs. Ketchem was born Jan. 29, 1919, in Struthers, a daughter of James Lewis and Alice Eleanor Gough Roemer Sr.
She graduated from Struthers High School in 1937, and had been secretary to the Principal of Struthers High after she completed former training at Youngstown Secretarial School.
Pollyanna was proud to serve her country as the Woman¹s Manager (Civilian) Mess No. 1 at the Santa Ana Army Air Base in Santa Ana, Calif., in 1944. She also was one of the strong women who were known as ³Rosie the Riveter² during World War II.
She was a member of the church and served as the church treasurer for 50 years. She loved her church and spent many happy hours working with the Women¹s Association, Ladies Guild, and the Jolly Rovers. She had a lovely voice and for several years sang in the church choir.
She loved to travel, having been to all the lower 48 states, she was always ready for a road trip. One of her favorite destinations was to visit her sister, Isabel, in Santa Barbara, Calif. She also belonged to a campers group that would share their travel experiences.
She enjoyed working in her flower gardens, being outside and toiling in the soil was a source of joy.
Her husband Walter E. Ketchem Sr., whom she married May 30, 1942, died May 12, 1976.
Surviving her are her children, Walter E. (Louise) Ketchem, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., Sandra L. Ketchem of Youngstown and Pollyanna K. (James) Myers of Ijamsville, Md.; three grandchildren, Douglas Myers, Eric Myers and Candace
Myers: five great-grandchildren, Ailey, Braden, Matthew, Jessica and Logan Myers; and a sister, Betty Bowersox of Leesburg, Fla.
Preceding her in death besides her husband and parents, was a daughter, Susan M. Dunbar; two sisters, Isabel Sperry and Mary Roemer; and three brothers, James L. Roemer Jr., John J. Roemer and Dahl Roemer.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Davis-Becker Funeral Home
in Boardman, and Saturday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the Gibson Heights 2nd Presbyterian Church, 755 E. Dewey Ave., Youngstown, OH 44502, or a charity of the donor¹s choice.
The family would like to say thank you to Don and Betty Haddle, Jeff Leonard (her hair stylist who would chauffer her to her appointments when she could no longer drive) and all those who sent cards and prayers.
And a special thanks to Dr. DiVito, for his care during her surgery in 2007, the staff at Pembrooke Place, especially Tressa (AKA Patty), Michelle, and RaeBeth, Drs. Lutton, Lee, Gallo, Sweeney, and Safier, and the staffs at Crossroads Hospice and at Cornerstone Health Care.
