Frank Feeley, 86
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA. - Frank Feeley, 86, formerly of Youngstown, passed away Nov. 24, 2014, at Delmar Gardens of Gwinnett in Lawrenceville.
His beloved wife, Dorothy Doughton Feeley, preceded him in death; as well as sisters Ellen Sondecker, Evelyn Jerry, Pauline Flint; brother Jack Feeley; and his parents.
The Davis-Becker Funeral Home, Boardman, will handle arrangements and friends and family may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home, where Wick Lodge No. 481, F&AM will hold services at 7 p.m. Also, a service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., and friends may call from 10 to 10:45 a.m., before the service.
Frank was born in Youngstown, March 15, 1928, the son of Leo J. and Sara Llewellyn Feeley.
He graduated from South High School and attended Youngstown State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
On Oct. 3, 1948, he married Dorothy Doughton. They celebrated 61 years of marriage. Dorothy passed away in October of 2009.
Frank leaves one daughter, Allison Edwards (Thomas J.) of Alpharetta, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Matthew Edwards (Amy) of Milton, Ga., and Megan Edwards Koch (Shawn) of Johns Creek, Ga.; as well as five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Owen and Ansley Edwards and Phoebe and Jack Koch. He also leaves one sister, Marilyn Gallagher.
Frank was active his entire life in civic and community affairs in Youngstown, having served as Administrative Assistant to the Mayor of Youngstown from 1962 to 1963. He was a member of the Industrial Management Association, served as a member of the Selective Service Board No. 78 of Mahoning County, and was on the English Festival advisory board of Y.S.U. He served for many years as a volunteer for the United Way, serving on the cabinet and was Chair of the Advanced Gifts Division several times. Also, Frank volunteered at Goodwill Industries and the Y.M.C.A. He served as Chair of the Foundation Committee for Park Vista Retirement Community, which is part of the Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Services, and also Frank was a member of the State Board of Trustees for the Ohio Presbyterian Retirement Foundation.
Frank was on the Board of Trustees of the Mill Creek Children's Center and served on the Board of the Family Service Agency. He was a volunteer for the Chaplaincy Program for the Organization of Protestant Men at the South Side Hospital and was past President of the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
As a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Frank served as Treasurer of the Board of Deacons, faithfully served on the Stewardship Committee, the Nominating Committee, and the Personnel Committee. He served as Chair of the Every Member Canvas, and was a ruling Elder. His last assignment, before moving to Georgia, was as Chairman of the Ushers Committee. Frank was a member of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the Friends of the Boardman Library and a member of the Youngstown Club.
In 1985, Frank retired as Vice President, Treasurer and Director of Personnel of the Metropolitan Savings Bank. He was a graduate of the Institute of Financial Education and past President of the Youngstown Chapter No. 2, and past president of District No. 7, of the Ohio Savings and Loan League.
Frank was very proud of his Welsh heritage, as his mother and wife were both born in Wales and both were active in the Welsh community of Youngstown. Frank was past President of the St. David's Society of Youngstown and served as a National Trustee for the Welsh National Association. In 1989, Frank and his wife were honored by the St. David's Society by being named the Welsh Man and Welsh Woman of the year.
In 1946, Frank began his Masonic journey. He became a Charter Member of the Youngstown Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and was the Second Master Councilor of the Youngstown Chapter. In 1981, he was awarded the DeMolay "Active" Legion of Honor. In 1990, he was elected an Active Member of the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay and made an Honorary Member.
In 1950, Frank was proud and honored to be raised a Master Mason by his brother, Jack F. Feeley, at St. Alban's Lodge No. 677 F. & A.M. Frank served as Worshipful Master of St. Alban's Lodge in 1958, and the Grand Lodge of Ohio, as District Deputy Grand Master from 1966 to 1968. He was a member of the Ways, Means and Accounts Committee for the Grand Lodge of Ohio and served 12 years as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Masonic Temple Company.
On Sept. 23, 1989, Frank was awarded the John Milton Goodenow award, named in honor of the First Grand Master of the State of Ohio, from the24th Masonic District. The award is given to Brethren from the 24th District who had made outstanding contributions towards the advancement of Freemasonry. Frank was a member of Youngstown Chapter No. 93. R.A.M., Buechner Council No. 107, R. & S.M. St John's Commandery No. 20, K.T., the Red Cross of Constantine, Holyrood Conclave, the Royal Order of Scotland, Aut Mori Grotto, Al Koran Shrine, A.A.O.N.M.S., and the Youngstown Shrine Club. Also, Frank was a member of the Philalethes Society.
In 1956, Frank received his degrees in the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Youngstown. He served 28 years as Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Valley and then became Secretary Emeritus. In 1970, Frank was awarded the 33 Degree by the Supreme Council in Milwaukee; he was created a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33 Degree, Honorary Member of the Supreme Council. In 1975, Frank was appointed Grand Sword Bearer and served in this post for 10 years.
On Sept. 25, 1986, he was elected and crowned an "Active" Member of the Supreme Council in Boston, serving this role for 11 years, making a total of 21 years that Frank served as a Supreme Council Officer. Being made an "Active" Member of the Supreme Council was an illustrious honor for Frank and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Youngstown, as Frank Feeley was the first member of the Valley of Youngstown to be elected to an "active" post on the Supreme Council of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in the Council's history.
He retired from the Supreme Council in 1997, and was elected Active Emeritus Member of the Supreme Council. Frank is the only member of the Valley of Youngstown to serve as Grand Sword Bearer and as an Active Member of the Supreme Council for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. Frank was proud to witness the opening of the Scottish Rite Masonic Children's Learning Center in the Masonic Temple in Youngstown.
Everyone who knew Frank liked him, trusted him and respected him. Frank was a Youngtown man through and through. He loved Youngstown and the Youngstown spirit to contribute and give back to others. He will be missed so much by his daughter and family.
