STRUTHERS - Mildred Ann Yakubov, 88, passed away peacefully Thursday evening at Hampton Woods Assisted Living in Poland, with family and close friends at her side.
Mrs. Yakubov, affectionately known as Millie, was born on Nov. 8, 1922, in Lowellville, the only daughter of Pete and Theresa Kinkela Leko. At the age of four, Millie and her family came to Struthers and to the house on Perry Street where she lived her entire life.
She was a 1941 graduate of Struthers High School and attended Youngstown College for two years in accounting while working as a nurse's aide. Millie worked as a bookkeeper for several years for P&LE Railroad before her marriage and her children (family) became her life's focus.
Millie was a lifelong member of the SNPJ (Slovenian National Benefit Society), the Croation Fraternal Union (CFU), and a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. She enjoyed her yearly garden, the outdoors, weekly trips in the summers to the SNPJ campsite for polka music and dances and listening to polka music.
Her husband, Joseph S. Yakubov, whom she married May 5, 1956, passed away on June 1, 2002. In addition to her parents and husband, Millie also lost her three dear brothers, Joseph, Steve and Albert Leko, prior to her own passing.
Her life, her influence, and Millie's "ways" are remembered and deeply cherished by her children, family, and close friends.
She leaves her loving daughter, Lyn (C.J. Julius) Yakubov of Edinburg, Pa.; sons, Paul Yakubov of Struthers and Steven (Tracey) Yakubov of Columbus; and grandchildren, Connor, Evan, Reece, Paula and Daniel Yakubov; along with both loving friends and extended family.
The family extends their sincerest thanks and love to Millie's caregiver, Velm Walker, who so loved Millie and gave her last years such dignity. The family also extends deepest thanks and appreciation to all of the staff at the Woodlands at Hampton Woods for creating a safe and caring environment for the only four months of Millie's life away from her cherished home.
Millie was committed to St. John's Cemetery (joining her husband in the Garden of Gethsemane) following a family prayer service and private gathering.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial Mass for Millie followed by a luncheon to celebrate her life, all to be held at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, on Saturday, Jan. 15, beginning at 10 a.m., where attendees will be received for the hour prior to the 11 a.m. service. Fr. Bernard Bonnot will officiate.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, Millie's family requests that contributions in Millie's name/memory to be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512 or to St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 764 Fifth St., Struthers, OH 44471.
