Struthers- Mildred Y. Barone, 91, of Struthers, died Tuesday afternoon at the Masternick Memorial Health Care Center in New Middletown.
Mrs. Barone, affectionately known as Grandma Millie, was born January 29, 1918 in Canton, a daughter of Dominic and Josephine Palumbo Martia. She was raised in Canton and moved to this area in 1937.
Grandma Millie was a wonderful homemaker, taking care of her husband of 58 years, her eleven children, and caring for her grandbabies as often and whenever she could. She actively participated in PTA and St. Nicholas Boosters, while proudly maintaining her beloved home on Sylvan Ave, and at the same time baking homemade bread, making cheese from cow's milk, sewing, and hosting her famous Sunday spaghetti dinners.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers, where she belonged to the Altar and Rosary Society, Infant Jesus of Prague, and baked for the church sales.
Her husband, Vincent J. Barone, whom she married June 5, 1937, died August 30, 1995. She leaves six daughters, Rosemary (Steve) Klim, Jo Ann (Robert) Stoops, Patti (Gene) Pompeii, Janet (Mike) Annichine, Debbie (Frank) Vaio, all of Struthers, and Laina "Millie" (John) Sturm of Lowellville; five sons, Ralph "Skip" (Gladys) Barone of Lowellville, James (Susan) Barone of Lowellville, Joseph (Margaret) Barone of Boynton Beach, FL, David (Marlene) Barone of Struthers, and Michael "Stymie" Barone of Struthers; one sister, Rose Altieri of Canton; 34 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Paul Martia; and three sisters, Helen Pascarella, Madeline Long, and Mary Dastalfo.
Services will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland and 11:00 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. Interment will be held at a later date at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
Friends will be received Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
