Struthers - Michael A. "Nut" Nittoli, 78, of Struthers, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010 at 4:45 p.m. at the Hospice House surrounded by his family and friends.
Mr. Nittoli was born June 19, 1931 in Youngstown, a son of the late Al and Margaret (Markovitz) Bilkie.
He was a 1951 graduate of East High School and attended Mount Union College in Alliance until enlisting in the United States Navy. He worked for Ohio Bell/Ameritech as a C.O. Tech for 33 years, retiring in 1991.
Mr. Nittoli was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. While serving with the Navy's Seventh Fleet in Korea, he was awarded the Korean Ribbon with three stars, the Korean Presidential Citation Award, the Japan Occupation Award, the China Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal.
In his earlier years, he was an accomplished athlete and played baseball in high school and football while at Mount Union College. In 1995, he was inducted in the East High School Hall of Fame. He also was the number one catcher while he played baseball at the Long Beach Naval Reserve. Mr. Nittoli also enjoyed restoring antique lamps and telephones and was an amateur Ham radio operator.
Mr. Nittoli was a former member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers.
He leaves his wife, the former Diana Lozinski, whom he married June 21, 1958; a son, Michael (Rena) Nittoli of Gibsonia, PA; a daughter, Karen (Russ Cornell) Nittoli of Struthers; a sister, Pauline Shaffer of Struthers; a brother, John (Betsy) Nittoli of Hubbard; two grandchildren, Vinny and Alexis Nittoli of Gibsonia; a sister-in-law, Margaret (Norman) Last of McLean, Virginia; a brother-in-law, Raymond Lozinski of Warren; a cousin, Frank (Pat) Dodd of Coitsville; and many friends.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Father Nicholas Mancini officiating. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
