Lowellville - Michael Thomas Mascarella, 86, of Lowellville, died Tuesday afternoon at his residence surrounded by his family.
Mike was born March 26, 1924 in Youngstown, a son of Rocco and Venerina Scarano Mascarella. He was raised on the East Side and lived in Briar Hill prior to moving to Lowellville.
After graduating from East High School, Mike enlisted in the United States Army and served from 1942 until 1949. He served in the 11th Airborne and fought in four campaigns. Two in New Guinea and two in the Phillipines. Mike was one of 5,000 Paratroopers that served under General McArthur after the bombing of Hiroshima and was present for the signing of the Peace Treaty. He received numerous medals including two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Returning from the Army, Mike was employed at Valley Mold and Iron for 33 years. During that time, in 1970, he founded Consolidated Construction. To support his family, he would work midnights at Valley Mold and Iron and day turn for his construction company. He retired from his construction company after 20 years.
Mike was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville, the Hubbard VFW, Knights of Columbus, and Lowellville Senior Citizens.
Through out the years, Mike remained in contact with his fellow 11th Airborne and attended all their reunions, including returning to Japan for the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Peace Treaty and the unveiling of the statue of General McArthur.
Mike had many interest. He loved fishing, wood working, and was an excellent cook. On Saturdays and Sundays he was known for watching the Food Network. But most of all, Mike enjoyed spending time with his family and playing cards at family gatherings.
He leaves his wife, the former Mary Muscatell, whom he married July 28, 1951; four sons, Thomas Mascarella of Jamestown, David, George, and Joseph Mascarella all of Lowellville; one daughter, Margaret Cunningham of Northfield, OH; four grandchildren, Margaret, Kathleena, Rocco, and David; and four great-grandchildren, Sabrina, Devon, Angelina, and Aliva; and his beloved dog, Sheeba.
Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret DeCarlo, Virginia Babinec, and Elenor Fusillo.
