Struthers - Michael T. Cossack , 94, formerly of Struthers, died Thursday afternoon, November 6th, at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center in Mt. Angel, Oregon.
Michael affectionately known as "Painter Mike" was born July 31, 1920 in Youngstown, Ohio, son of Michael and Maria (Yulana) Cossack. He was raised in Youngstown and in 1952 he moved to Struthers where he resided until moving to Oregon to be with his son Brian in 2009.
A graduate of East High School, Class of 1938, Michael served in the Civilian Conservation Corps #554 in Stanfield, Oregon, then enlisted in the United States Air Corp where he served from 1939 until 1945. He was an Army Veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theater at Wheeler Army Air Field in Hawaii at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941. Michael and his son Brian revisited Wheeler Air Base in March of 2012.
After returning from the war Michael pursued his education and attended the Penn Ohio Trade School, Choffin Career Center, Republic Steel Educational Institute, and the International Correspondence School. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and History.
For 31 years Michael was employed as a Stationary Engineer for Republic Steel. He retired in 1982.
He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus, the Order of Purple Heart, Eagles, Amvets Post #44, and the Disabled American Veterans of Youngstown. Michael was a member of Local 1331, Republic Steel Corporation and SOAR.
He was a Barbershopper singer for 26 years and performed with the Youngstown Western Reserve Chorus, the Salem Jubilee Chorus and the Warren Stephen Fostor Chorus.
Michael was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church now Christ our Savior Parish where he was a 30 year member of its' choir, and a member of the Holy Name Society, Altar & Rosary Society, and Infant Jesus of Prague.
His wife of 60 years, the former Margaret Repasky, whom he married May 18, 1948, died January 4, 2008. He leaves two sons, Michael Cossack, Jr. of Youngstown and Brian Cossack of Salem, OR; one daughter, Cynthia Braden of Stow, OH; four grandchildren, Micahel Paul Cossack, Eric Gbur, Melissa Cossack, all of Youngstown,and Bill Braden of Silver Lake; two great-grandchildren, Zachary and Leah Cossack of Youngstown; and one great-great-grandchild.
Besides his parents and wife, Michael was preceded in death by one son, Lawrence Cossack; two daughters, Katherine Mary Cossack and Diane Cossack; and three sisters, Atty. Leda Hartwell, Bertha Yashnick, Lyda McGrail, and brother, John Cossack of Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 5-8 PM at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home.
A Prayer Service will be held Saturday at 9:15 AM at the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM at Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Church in Struthers with Fr. Bernard Gaeta officiating. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
