FAIRFIELD - Michael J. Bindas, 79, died June 28, 2018, at his residence. Michael was born July 18, 1938, in Youngstown, a son of Michael and Elizabeth Hussar Bindas.
He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Youngstown State University.
He began working at Packard Electric, in Warren in 1956 and in 1958 he was elected to his first union position for IUE Local 717. In 1961, he was one of the youngest members of the IUE National Negotiations Committee and continued to take part in the committee until 1982.
A highlight of Mr. Bindas’s career was when he was inducted into the Packard Electric Hall of Fame in 1978, at which time he was one of the only union members to receive this honor. He continued to hold union positions in the IUE Local 717 until 1983 when his hard work led him to becoming elected as secretary treasurer of IUE District 7 in Kettering, Ohio. Following this move to Dayton, in 1988 he was elected president of IUE District 7. In 2003 his career trajectory led to his final position which was the president of the IUE (CWA) in Washington, D.C., and he held this position until retirement in 2005, altogether ending his 49 years union service.
He was a member of the Heritage Presbyterian Church and a devout Christian with undeniable faith in Jesus Christ his Lord and Savior, he loved music, fishing on Lake Erie, was a devoted fan of Ohio State University and Cleveland Cavaliers, was an avid follower of the stock market, a member of the Democratic Party and most importantly he loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Kilgore) Bindas; sisters Louise (Frank) Rulli of Poland and Trudy Farbman of Austintown; his children, Laura Smith of Springfield, Ohio, Jody Bindas of Springfield, Michael Bindas (Reesa) of Greenville, S.C., Susanne Bindas (Seigfried) of Fairfield, Michelle Lovell (David) of Parrish, Fla., and Patty Bindas of Fairfield.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jacqueline Palmer of Reynoldsburg, Colleen Smith of Springfield, Jennifer Smith of Westerville, Amber Mays of Lexington, Ky., Tricia Bindas (Seigfried) of Columbus, Alexis Lovell of Parrish, Fla., Scott Michael Bindas of Fairfield, Michaela Bindas of Greenville, and Reese Bindas of Greenville; a great-grandchild, Jack Ryan Palmer of Columbus; and an aunt, Betty DeArcangelis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael Bindas and Elizabeth (Hussar) Bindas; son-in-law, Walter Patrick Smith; aunts and uncles, Robert, Ann (George)Babinchak, Dorothy (Mike)Badnarik, Margaret (Joseph)DePillo, Joseph DeArcangelis,Susan Bindas, Johnny Bindas, Joseph Hussar, Rose Veisz, and William (Marie)Hussar; and one nephew, Stephen Chad Farbman.
Services will be held at the Heritage Presbyterian Church, Monday at noon with Pastor David Neil Lovell and Pastor Michelle Josephine Lovell officiating. Entombment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
Friends and family will be received Monday from 10 to 11:45 a.m. at the church.
