Michael Jonathan Bartell

CANFIELD – Michael Jonathan Bartell, 64, died Jan. 22, 2018, at his residence with his family by his side.
Michael was born Aug. 27, 1953, in Youngstown, a son of William Bartell Sr. and Sofia (Roth) Froom.
He was a 1971 graduate of Chaney High School. He then attended the Ohio Police Officer Academy, where he then became a police officer. He served as a Springfield Township police officer for 15 years. Michael also worked at Compco Metal in Youngstown for 35 years, retiring in 2005. He was an employee/volunteer at Angels for Animals in Canfield. Michael was a volunteer at the Springfield Township Fire Department. He was a past member of the Springfield Township Ruritans, fraternal member of the Youngstown Saxon Club, and the YMCA, where he worked out even through his illness.
He was a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church in North Lima. Michael received an Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy, where he did basic training at Great Lakes Training Facility in Great Lakes, IL. He also boxed in the Golden Gloves and was a member of the original Youngstown Rugby team. He refereed for many years for local high school basketball teams and played softball in the Steel Valley Softball League. Michael enjoyed car restoration, he could build cars from the ground up. He loved his farm, and his Great Dane.
He is survived by his love of his life, the former Taffy “Pogo” Bair of Canfield, whom he married Aug. 16, 1986, and were devoted to each other; his mother, Sofia Froom of Canfield; his identical twin brother, William (Mary) Bartell Jr. of Struthers; sister Cindy (Bob) Hazel of Poland; brother Marty Bartell of New Lenox, Ill.; two nephews who where like sons, Christopher and Brian Bartell; three nieces who were like daughters, Whitney Corey, Talley Miller “Twink” and Baylee Felger; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He leaves his car buddies, Jim DeCenso and Jack Willison; his motorcycle buddy Eugene Hostetter, where they took trips to the Pentagon and Sturgis. Pogo went on all the rides with him. He also leaves his partner in crime, Bart Felger and his Great Dane, Eightball, who never left his side during his illness.
Michael was preceded in death by his father, William Bartell and brother, Richard Bartell.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Good Hope Lutheran Church, 12030 Market St. in North Lima, with Pastor Ralph Edwards officiating. Friends will be received Friday from 10 to 11 a.m.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sudershan Garg and Dr. Maged Awadalla, Michael’s close friend and physician.
