Struthers - Merle Perkins, 84, of Struthers, died, Thursday, July 30, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Perkins was born February 25, 1925 in Struthers, a son of William and Sarah Thompson Perkins, and was a life long area resident.
He was a 1943 graduate of Struthers High School, and was a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church. He was WWII Navy veteran, where he received the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal. During the Korean Conflict, Mr. Perkins served in the Army, and was stationed in Germany, where he received the Occupational and Good Conduct Medals. After returning home from the war, he was the Owner of Perkins Amaco Station. Retiring in 1980 after 26 years. He was a member of the Struthers VFW post 3538, and was a member of the Sulgrave Masonic Lodge # 696 F. & A.M, and the Aut Mori Grotto, where he belonged to its Revel's. He also was an avid bowler and golfer.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Karol Schober, whom he married January 31, 1953, three children Carol (John) Kology of Struthers, Karen (James) Rinehart of Trabuco Canyon, CA; and Jeffrey M. Perkins of Peoria, AZ; 4 grandchildren Jennifer (Jason) Franceschelli of Peyton, CO, Carol Lynn (Steve) Procick of Lowellville, OH, Paige & Jeffrey Rinehart both of Trabuco Canyon, CA; 5 Great-Grandchildren, Taylor and Gianna Franceschelli, Gavin, Savannah and Sydney Procick.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers Tom, Glenn, Dale, Harold and Melvin Perkins.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers.
