Struthers - Matthias Schmidt, 85, died Friday, July 19, 2024, at Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House.
Matthias, known as "Matt" by most, was born January 1, 1939 in Yugoslavia, a son of the late Stefan and Magdalena Morell Schmidt.
In 1956, Matt immigrated to the United States and settled in Struthers. His work ethic was evident from a young age as he took on roles in a lumberyard and as a mechanic before proudly serving in the United States Army as a radio operator stationed in Germany. It was during his time in Germany that Matt met the love of his life, Inge Kreuder and they exchanged vows on February 5, 1963. While still in Germany, they welcomed their first born son before returning to Struthers in 1964, after his military service.
There, they bought a home in the Nebo neighborhood and grew their family with the birth of two more children. Their enduring marriage of 61 years was blessed with the addition of six grandchildren, who affectionately referred to him as "Papa." Matt cherished the moments spent with his grandchildren and found joy in attending their extracurricular activities and events.
A devoted family man and a hardworking provider, Matt was a skilled electrician by trade. Matt dedicated many years of service first with GATX and retired from WCI. A member of the United Steelworkers Union, Matt's talents extended beyond electrical work and earned him the reputation of being a true 'Mr. Fix It.' His family fondly recalls how if Papa couldn't fix it, odds were it couldn't be fixed at all! His generosity knew no bounds as he not only maintained his own home but often tended to the maintenance needs of his children's homes.
In addition to his wife, Inge, Matt is survived by his children, Stefan Schmidt of Columbus, Robert (Michelle) Schmidt of Stow, and Amy (Kelly) Berry of Columbus; and his five grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Matt was preceded in death by one grandson.
A private Celebration of Life Gathering will he held. There are no calling hours.
