Mary Elizabeth (Kovy) Poldergotch of Boardman lost her bout with cancer and passed away, peacefully at her home, on Thursday, June 30, 2016. She was born in Youngstown to the late Grega and Anna (Lubonavich) Kovacicek on December 27, 1920 and attended McDonald High School. Both her parents passed away in 1937. Mary obtained a beauticians license and worked in Niles. She enjoyed baking, cooking, canning, sewing and crocheting, as well as sports such as tennis, softball, bowling and swimming. Mary shortened her name to Kovy in 1942 and enlisted in the Woman’s Army Auxiliary Corps in August 1943. She was stationed overseas in North Africa and Europe as a Postal Technician serving at the rank of Technician Fifth Grade. She was honorably discharged on August 28, 1945 having earned the Good Conduct Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with the Bronze Star for the Rome-Arno Campaign, Victory in Europe Medal and the WAAC Service Ribbon.
When she returned home she resumed beautician work, met and married Paul Poldergotch in 1948. Together they had three children. She was employed in retail for Strauss and was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Boardman. She enjoyed being a den mother for the Cub Scouts and Brownies and making costumes for her children’s school plays and Halloween parties. She will always be remembered and deeply missed.
She leaves her daughter, Patricia (Poldergotch) Furman; sons, Paul Poldergotch Jr., and Vanroy Poldergotch; granddaughter, Ami (Furman) Hall, D.O.; great granddaughter, Gwenevere Hall; great grandson, Matthew Hall; and her sister, Veronica Hernandez.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Poldergotch; brothers, Joseph Kovacicek, Nick Kovac, and George Kovach; and sisters, Caroline Suhar, Ann Toth, Mildred Odvar and Frances Sima.
In honoring her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 12pm at the Kerr Cemetery Chapel, 1240 Salt Springs Rd. Mineral Ridge, OH. 44440.
The family would like to extend their sincerest appreciation to the Hospice of the Valley staff for their professional care and support.
