Poland - Mary E. Johnson, 85, died Saturday afternoon, October 4, 2014 at Maplecrest Nursing Home in Struthers.
Mrs. Johnson was born September 10, 1929 in New Castle, PA, a daughter of Irwin and Elizabeth Murray Ferry.
She was a 1947 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. Mrs. Johnson worked as a sales representative for Home Interiors for over 20 years and throughout the years babysat many children at her home. She was also a dedicated homemaker, raising her seven children. Mrs. Johnson was very involved in her children's activities as they were growing up, receiving an award for the longest tenured Band Parent.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers, where she belonged to its Altar and Rosary Society and volunteered many years with the church's festival. In her free time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, making crafts, sewing, crocheting, and trips to Mountaineer. She also loved to bake and was known for her cookies, selling them for many years at Christmas time.
Her husband, Richard L. Johnson, whom she married February 7, 1948, died September 6, 2012. She is survived by two sons, Richard (Victoria) Johnson Jr. of Youngstown and Michael (Diane) Johnson of Poland; four daughters, Mary Johnson, Susan Johnson, both of Youngstown, Sally (Martin) Hobby of New Springfield and Patty (Nicholas) DiVencenzo of Struthers; two sisters, Ruth Burns of Poland and Margaret (Charles "Dewey") Jenkins of Youngstown; a brother, Fred (Eleanor) Dunn of Hartford, CT; 19 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Whipkey; one grandson, Vincent DiVencenzo; three brothers, Richard, Irwin "Sky", and William Ferry.
A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions in Mrs. Johnson's name to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or to the American Diabetes Association.
The family would like to express their appreciation and thank Maplecrest Nursing Home and its staff for the wonderful care, support, and love they gave to both Mary and her husband Richard during their stay with them.
