Poland - Mary C. Grabowski (Michalowska), 90, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2018.
Mary was born in a small village near Warsaw, Poland on August 23, 1927, a daughter of Joseph and Wladyslawa (Hilevska) Michalowski. After the war, she married her husband Roman Grabowski in 1947 and they remained together for 52 years. They immigrated to Youngstown in the 1950's.
Mary was very proud of her Polish heritage and was active in the Polish community. She was commissioner for the Polish National Alliance, District 9, an active member of the Krakusy Society, and a volunteer pierogi worker at St. Stanislaus Parish.
Mary retired from Benada Aluminum Company after many years. She was always a hard worker who kept an immaculate home. She enjoyed working in her garden and beautiful flowers were in bloom in her yard from spring to fall.
Visitors were always welcome in her home, and as soon as they sat down there would be food on the table. Food was abundant at family holiday dinners from homemade pierogi to kolachi. And of course jello molds!
Her grandchildren were the joy of her life. She spoiled them with her time and generous gifts. As she grew older, her grandson Mark became her right hand man around the home. She looked forward to visits in California with her granddaughter. She had a very strong bond with her son who cared for her in her later years. Her friends, extended family, and caregivers all enjoyed her loving and sociable nature.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Roman in 1999. She is survived by her son, Chet (Nancy) Grabowski of Poland; grandchildren, Laura Boase of Spring Valley, California and Mark Grabowski of St. Peter's, Missouri; a sister, Sophie Sujka of Poland, Europe; a niece, Iwona (Jack) Zarebski and their children Eliza, Claudia, and Adam; and relatives Krystyna Michalowska and Ryszard Michalowski of Chicago. She will be missed by her life long friends, especially Mary Nadoly and Regina Maszcak.
Family and friends will be received on Thursday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at Holy Family Church, 2729 Center Rd., Poland, where a Mass of Christian Burial will follow on Thursday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Poland Riverside Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff of Masternick Memorial Health Care Center and Hospice of the Valley and Beth for their wonderful and compassionate care of Mary.
In memory of Mary, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer Network, 4214 Market St., Youngstown, Ohio 44512 or to alzarnet.org.
