Mary Donatelli

March 18, 1922 — November 12, 2014

Lowellville - Mary Donatelli, 92, died Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at her home.

Mary was born March 18, 1922 in Youngstown, a daughter of Frank and Nancy Oleo Joy.

She was a graduate of The Rayen School. On December 14, 1946, Mary wed Daniel Donatelli and became a homemaker. A devoted wife, Mary often referred to her husband as "the best man in the world." She took stellar care of her husband through sickness and health and often bragged about her husband and family. She loved being Mrs. Dan Donatelli and was proud of all the things her husband accomplished in his lifetime.

Affectionately known by her grandchildren as Nana, she took pride and joy in watching her grandkids grow. With a youthful spirit, she made their childhood fun and rich with love and laughter, so much so that no one ever wanted to leave Nana's house. A plaque in her kitchen that reads "Nana's Kitchen: Where memories are made and grandkids are spoiled" said it all. That grandmotherly bond became even stronger through adulthood. Through quality time spent sharing stories and never before heard memories, a new level of friendship and respect was established. And her generosity and love was unwavering, always putting everyone's needs before hers. One of Mary's last and most heartfelt outings was to the new Austintown Racino with her granddaughter, Jeannine, as she had always loved playing slots.

A master in the kitchen, Mary's wedding soup was her delicacy. Her family couldn't wait to gather on holidays to feast on her special recipe. Mary often thought of family and friends through baking and gifting Italian pizzelles to everyone she knew. But one of her most special and most anticipated traditions for the family was to bake Easter bread from scratch, often making it in the shape of a baby doll for all of her grandchildren.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Lowellville and was involved with the Mt. Carmel Society Ladies Auxiliary.

Her husband, Daniel, preceded her in death on April 25, 1998. She is survived by two sons, Daniel (Kathy) Donatelli of Punta Gorda, FL and Benjamin (JoAnn) Donatelli of Lowellville; three grandchildren, Jennifer (Doug) Hutchinson of Lees Summit, MO, Daniel (Monica) Donatelli of Mission, KS, and Jeannine Donatelli of Canfield; and two great-grandchildren, Cole and Cooper Hutchinson.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Donatelli was preceded in death by four sisters, Philomena Tondo, Minnie Vitale, Connie Donnarrumo, and Rose Joy; and four brothers, Nicholas, Peter, Tony, and James Joy.

A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 244 McGill St., Lowellville, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery, Lowellville.

Family and friends will be received today from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
