Struthers - Martin R. Berendt, 86, died Saturday morning, August 10, 2013 at the Hospice House after a courageous battle with skin cancer.
Martin, affectionately known as "Marty" was born June 10, 1927 in Youngstown, a son of George and Katherine (Kisch) Berendt.
A graduate of East High School, Marty attended Youngstown State University and trade school, studying to be a draftsman. Mr. Berendt worked first as a clerical draftsman and retired as a purchasing agent from Truscon Steel in 1982, after 33 years of service.
Mr. Berendt was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of New Life Lutheran Church in Youngstown, the V.F.W Post No. 3538, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles No. 213, and was a F. & A. M. of the Hillman Lodge No. 481.
In his spare time, Marty enjoyed bowling, planting his annual vegetable garden, and especially golfing, having made eight holes-in-one in his lifetime.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Emily, whom he married March 20, 1948; two children, Martin (Linda Wittenauer) Berendt Jr. of Youngstown and Cheryl (Andrew Johnson) Berendt of Youngstown; two, grandchildren, Valerie (Jeff) Rainer of Rootstown and Daniel (Molly) Berendt of Poland; four great-grandchildren, Macey and Tyson Rainer and Cadence and Kilaney Berendt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Berendt was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Varley; and two brothers, George and William Berendt.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at noon at New Life Lutheran Church, 1181 Churchill-Hubbard Rd., Youngstown, with Pastor Bill Wessner officiating.
Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. until noon at the church.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions made payable to Emily Berendt, but ask that they be sent in c/o Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, OH 44471. The family is planning on using the contributions to have a memorial donated to the Hospice House in Martin's memory.
