Marilyn L. Sweeney

June 22, 1930 — May 27, 2023

North Lima

North Lima-Marilyn L. Sweeney was called home by the Lord on Saturday, May 27, 2023, leaving behind many who will miss her warmth, kindness and boundless passion for life.

Marilyn was born in Youngstown, Ohio on June 22, 1930, to Virginia Richards and Ralph R. Sampsell. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph N. Lotze, and second husband, Robert H. Sweeney.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory, sister Constance Maris; son Richard Lotze (Lisa); daughters Joan Lotze (Patricia) and Susan Lotze; grandchildren Autumn Lotze, Lauren Wagner (Andrew), Nathan Lotze and Lukas Crumpley; great-grandchildren Ryann, Andie and Louden Wagner; and dozens of beloved nephews, cousins, family members and friends.

She was an ardent Youngstown native throughout her nearly 93 years, and the friendships she formed throughout her childhood created deep lifelong bonds. She graduated from South High School and attended Ohio University, where she excelled in business courses. She would later become president of the Tee Nee Trailer Company, founded in 1939 by her father.  Marilyn had a passion for interior design and art mediums of all kind.  She did a number of paintings, including a large panoramic display of the Nativity.  Painted in 1968 and composed also of cloth, this painting is displayed each year during the Christmas season at the Youngstown YMCA.   She also opened a western-themed boutique called “Westward Look” in North Lima.

She was a devout member and Sunday school teacher of Pleasant Grove United Presbyterian church for decades. An active patron with the Butler Institute of American Art during the 1970’s and 80’s, she and her husband Robert created the Sweeney Children’s Gallery within the Institute.  She was blessed to have travelled to many cities across America and several countries across the world.

Marilyn lived a life filled with love, laughter, joy and optimism.  Family and friends were extremely important to her.  We now say goodbye to a dear, gracious soul. She will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.

There was a small funeral service held for immediate family members only and interment was at Lake Park Cemetery.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to The Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., Youngstown, Ohio 44502, earmarked for the Sweeney Children’s Gallery.

Arrangements were handled by the Davis-Becker Funeral Home. Please visit www.beckerobits.com to share memories and condolences.
