Marilyn J. Galgan

Poland - Marilyn J. Galgan, 87, passed away Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at Hospice of the Valley's Hospice House.

Mrs. Galgan was born February 26, 1928 in Youngstown, a daughter of Carl and Helen Burnett Simpson.

Raised in Youngstown, she was a graduate of South High School. She married Matthew Galgan on July 28, 1951 and they resided in Youngstown until moving to New Springfield in 1963.

In 1969, Mrs. Galgan received her LPN degree from the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing. She began her nursing career at St. Elizabeth Hospital and later worked for Shepherd of the Valley in Niles. In 1986, she and her husband relocated to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where she continued her nursing career at Mt. Sinai Hospital Rehab Center, retiring in 1997. After retirement, they moved back to Canfield. On July 15, 2003, her husband Matthew preceded her in death.

Marilyn was a longtime member of Woodworth Church of the Brethren, where she volunteered as a former church secretary. More recently, she was attending Poland Presbyterian Church, while she was living in Poland the last decade.

She enjoyed crocheting, particularly baby blankets which she donated to the children's hospitals, reading, listening to classical and piano music, meeting longtime friends for lunch dates, and playing cards. Mrs. Galgan also volunteered for numerous organizations, including the Salvation Army and Blackburn Home. She was also a member of the Friends of the Poland Library.

Marilyn is survived by her son, Lee (Karen) Galgan of Poland; two grandchildren, Kristen (Frank) Ansevin of Boardman and Shannon Galgan of Poland; her dear aunt, Virginia Clay of Barnesville; six nieces and many close friends.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Galgan; and a brother, James Simpson.

Family and friends will be received on Monday from 10-10:45 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 5400 Market St., Boardman, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m.

Memorial tributes may take the form of contributions in Mrs. Galgan's name to the Hospice House, 9803 Sharrott Rd., Poland, Ohio 44514.
