Marian Ann "Mae" Scavelli

September 12, 1925 — November 1, 2014

Youngstown - Marian "Mae" Scavelli, 89, formerly of Struthers, died Saturday evening, November 1, 2014 at The Inn at Christine Valley, where she has lived for the past four years.

Mrs. Scavelli, affectionately known as "Mae," was born September 12, 1925 in Hillsville, PA, a daughter of Bruno and Angela Loccisano Schiavello. She was raised in Farrell, PA and moved to Lowellville upon her marriage, and later to Struthers in 1968.

After high school, Mae managed Detsen Firestone, working in the records department, then for Westinghouse, and retired from Packard Electric after seventeen years to dedicate her time to raising her sons. Her main role was that of a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.

Mrs. Scavelli's greatest love was her family and she centered herself around them. Marian cherished her husband and sons and always made her daughters-in-law feel as if they were her own daughters. One of Mae's happiest days of her life was when she received the title of grandma and got to welcome the light of her life, Nina Marie, into the world. Grandma Mae was Nina's best friend and Nina will forever keep their play dates and memories made together tucked away close to her heart.

Mrs. Scavelli had a way of making everyone feel welcome in her home and assured that nobody ever left hungry. She hosted many Italian feasts over the years, making some of the best homemade bread, pizza, sauce, meatballs, pasta, and wedding soup that one would ever taste.

Some of Mae's favorite past times include gardening, shopping, playing cards, and reading recipes. In the early 1960's, Mae and her husband operated bowling lanes, Woodlow and Skyway Lanes. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., California, Florida, Arizona, and most of the Midwest, attending bowling tournaments and supporting his passion.

Mrs. Scavelli will always be remembered for her kindness and compassionate heart, as she always tried to help anyone in need, her hard work ethic, and never slowing down.

A devoted Catholic, Mrs. Scavelli was a member of Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church and belonged to its Altar and Rosary Society. While living in Lowellville, she was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church.

Her husband and the love of her life, Louis A. Scavelli, whom she married April 18, 1959, preceded her in death on January 13, 1994. She will always be lovingly remembered by her two sons, Joseph B. (Susan) Scavelli of Fort Myers, FL and Louis W. (Maureen) Scavelli of Boardman; her pride and joy, granddaughter, Nina Marie Scavelli; sister, Margaret "Maggie" (Bill) Biblis of Sharon, PA; sister-in-law, Marilyn Hauser of Pasadena, TX; brother-in-law, Joey Scavelli of Pasdena, TX; and a host of beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Scavelli was preceded in death by five siblings, Rocco Schiavello, Theresa Marcello, Louis, Carmen, and Thomas Schuville; and her father and mother-in-law, Joseph and Nellie Scavelli.

A prayer service will be held Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main Street, Poland followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Lowellville.

Family and friends will be received Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Scavelli's family would like to express their appreciation and thank the staff of The Inn at Christine Valley, MVI Hospice, and Executive Care for the wonderful care they gave to Mae.
