New Middletown - Margaret F. "Peg" Mattes, 90, formerly of Struthers, died December 21, 2016 in St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. She was born January 21, 1926 in New Castle, PA, daughter of the late Willis and Clara Elizabeth Majors.
She was a graduate of Penn-Ohio University, where she earned an Associates Degree in Business. Peg was employed as a shoe clerk for Lustigs, first in Youngstown and later in Boardman, retiring after 32 years of employment. She was an active member of Faith Community Covenant Church, the former Bethlehem United Church of Christ, where she was involved with the choir, memorial committee, welcome committee and the kitchen. She enjoyed dancing, especially tap dancing, roller skating and collecting dolls. Peg was an accomplished seamstress and cook, was a great hostess and would often host the neighborhood ladies luncheon and 500 Club.
She leaves her husband William, whom she married on December 7, 1974; her daughter, Marsha (Duane) Wilson Bailey of Kitty Hawk, NC; step-daughter, Karen (David) Reese of Beaver, PA: grandchildren, Thomas Bailey and Bobbie (David) Stager; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Brendan and Aydan; step-grandchildren, Shannon (Chuck) Hanton, Dane Reese, Colin Reese, Meghan Mattes and Marcus Mattes and step-great grandchildren, Chase, Chelsea and Ella.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-son Ken Mattes; and her brothers, Walter "Lefty" Majors and Burton Majors.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2016 at 12pm at the Faith Community Covenant Church, 1919 E. Midlothian Blvd. Youngstown, OH. 44502 with the Rev. Michael Zabel officiating.
Visitation will be prior to the service from 11am-12pm at the church.
