Mabel Creed, 97 Struthers- Mabel Lyon Creed, 97, 405 Spring Street died peacefully, surrounded by family, Wednesday afternoon at her residence. She was born August 28, 1907 in Struthers, a daughter of Arthur M. and Grace Moore Lyon. She was a life long resident. She enjoyed a comfortable childhood being raised by a successful family, being the first young woman in town to have a car and being educated and a graduate of the National Park Seminary in Washington, D.C. where she was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi sorority. However, her strength became evident during the Depression when the family encountered extreme difficulty. She worked to help support herself and her young family catering and cooking for others. She raised and butchered her own chickens for her famous chicken pot pie. She built a successful catering business and was well known throughout the area for her pie baking skill. She succeeded her father in business and became a real estate entrepreneur in her own right, developing many residential and commercial areas in the Struthers area. This includes the Lake Shore area at Lake Hamilton. In 1962 she built additions onto the family home to create Maplecrest Nursing Home, known for its homelike care. It was family owned and operated until it was sold in 1997. The Lyon family had donated the property for the original Lyon Plat Elementary School recently replaced by the new Struthers Elementary School where she was honored at the dedication. Mrs. Creed was well known for her âaA"hands onâaA management of all her projects. She was likely to be found on a roof or in a ditch. At Maplecrest she could be in the kitchen adding her special touch. She worked at keeping the rents of her tenants low if they would help themselves by maintaining the properties. She and her friend, the late Rachel Becker traveled extensively in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Mrs. Creed was a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church where she had been active in the âaA"Bonds for BuildingâaA dinners to fund the Educational Building. Over the years she continued generously supporting the church. She had been a Gray Lady Volunteer in the North Side Hospital for many years. She was a former member of the Struthers Reading Circle, the Youngstown Club and the Youngstown Country Club. Her husband, Joe H. Creed whom she married June 9, 1928, died September 4, 1963.
