STRUTHERS - Lucy Suszczynski, 96, died peacefully on the morning of August 13, 2015, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Lucy was born on January 27, 1919 in the Brier Hill area of Youngstown, Ohio. She was the second of five children and oldest daughter born to John and Antoinette Fabrizio Santine.
At a very young age, Lucy learned how to sew and crochet. She became an excellent seamstress and sewed most of her own clothes. She also sewed beautiful dresses and outfits for her mother, her sister, and her daughter. Throughout the years, Lucy made many curtains and tablecloths for her home and crocheted dozens of beautiful afghans and scarves, and doilies to be treasured.
Lucy always helped her mother take care of the house and especially her sister Anna who was very sick as a child. When she was 16, Lucy got a job at W.T. Grant as a clerk in the yard goods department, which was perfect with her sewing experience. She remained there until her marriage.
On February 24, 1945, Lucy married the love of her life, Pete Suszczynski. They were married at St. Ann Church in Brier Hill by Fr. William P. Dunn. Lucy and Pete were the proud parents of two children. They had a happy, loving marriage and never had an argument. They were married for almost 65 years when her beloved Pete died on October 16, 2009. Lucy was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Struthers. She had loved going to Mass and prayed every day.
Lucy loved being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Besides sewing, Lucy also enjoyed cooking, baking, and working on household projects with her husband. She also had wonderful memories of vacations with her husband and daughter traveling several times to Hawaii, Myrtle Beach, Niagara Falls, Las Vegas, Disney World, Washington D.C., and about twenty-five trips to Atlantic City (but never came home with extra money!). Lucy also loved to go to Mountaineer with her daughter to play the slots. They went there as often as possible, the last time in November 2013. Lucy was a fan of the Cleveland Indians and watched all of their games. She will be forever loved and deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Left to cherish so many loving memories of Lucy are her son, Peter Suszczynski of Beaver Township; her daughter, Sandra Suszczynski with whom she made her home; her granddaughter, Amy (CJ) Close; her daughter-in-law, Deena Suszczynski of Struthers; a special niece, Carol (Dennis) Gomez of Boardman; a sister-in-law, Helen Donofrio of Boardman; several nieces, nephews and friends; and her loving sheltie, Caramel.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Pete; her parents; her brothers, James Santine and Benjamin Santine; her sisters, Adeline Galanses and Anna Bokone; a special niece, Jeanne Bokone Wall; and her dear sheltie, Packy.
A prayer service will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, 11 Spring St., Struthers, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. John The Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Family and friends will be received on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to extend their appreciation to the entire staff of MVI Hospice Care, especially all of the nurses and aides for the wonderful, compassionate care they gave to Lucy.
