Lucy June Cailor, 79

Boardman- Services will be Sunday 3:00PM at Davis-Becker Funeral Home, 8536 Market St., Boardman for Lucy June Cailor, 79, of Boardman, who died Thursday at home surrounded by her family.

Lucy was born June 14, 1935 in Niles and was a graduate of Youngstown University and received a BSN from the Youngstown Hospital Association School of Nursing. She began as a nursing arts instructor before starting a family with her husband of 25 years, the late L.M. "Skip" Cailor.

She is survived by two sons, Randy (and Cathy) Cailor of Atlanta and Brad ( Lisa) Cailor of Columbus; and a daughter, Cheryl (Tony) Tarantino of Boardman with whom she made her home; five grandchildren, Tony and Carmen Tarantino, Jennifer, Stephanie and Michelle Cailor; and a sister, Bert Johnson of Bishop, CA.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lena (Moritz) Liberatore, and a sister, Joan Barnes.

Lucy Cailor was an exemplary advocate for children who began her service to the community when she held various offices for the West Blvd PTA. As her children grew up, she was president of Center Middle PTA and committee member at the High School PTA. Lucy was on the Executive Board of the Ohio State PTA where she served as the Health and Education Chairman for the State PTA.

In 1975, Mrs. Cailor ran for the Boardman Board of Education. Her pink "Cailor Cares" signs popped up all over the community and helped elect her as one of the first women on the Boardman Board of Education. During her tenure that lasted until 1983, Lucy served as President of the Board and was the first member ever elected as a director of the Executive Committee of the NE Region Ohio School Board. She also was president of the Fortnightly IV Federated Club.

Lucy's lifelong concern for children with special needs and learning disabilities led her to be an advocate for children through her involvement with many health and education organizations throughout the community. She was Treasurer for the Association for Children With Learning Disabilities, the Public Education Chairman for the March of Dimes, Chairman of the Mahoning County AIDS Task Force, a member of the Education Committee of Trumbull County AIDS Task Force and a member of the Advisory Committee of the Head Start GRADS program for Mahoning and Trumbull counties. She also worked as a Health Educator in the Youngtown Schools for many years.

With debilitating arthritis and failing health in recent years, Lucy's involvement was limited to being #1 fan to her grandchildren. She was seen most weekends at her grandsons' football, basketball, and baseball games. Lucy described her greatest joy was "to be an example that it is important to become involved in schools and the community to show how much I care."

Friends and family will be received Sunday from 1-3PM at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Boardman Schools Board of Education Scholarship Funds, 7410 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
