Lois P. Skillman

January 12, 1925 — May 16, 2015

COLUMBIANA-Lois Patricia (Bonekamp) Skillman, died on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at Parkside Health Care Center at the age of 90. She was born on January 12, 1925 in Youngstown. She grew up in the Fosterville area on Glenwood Avenue, where her parents owned a family-run grocery store. She maintained a residence in Boardman for most of her life.

Lois attended Youngstown South High School, graduating in 1943. It was during this time that she met Robert T. Skillman, whom she would later marry in a small ceremony on June 23, 1945. The couple was married for 61 years. She briefly attended Youngstown State University, studying music theory and practice. After a few years of marriage, Lois became a mother and then a grandmother and finally a great-grandmother; she always regarded her family as her most precious treasure.

She was a charter member of the Christ United Presbyterian Church, was an active member of the Youngstown Saxon Club, and the Concordia Chorus. Lois had a passion for music and was an accomplished vocalist. Years after her children were grown, she traveled to Germany and Austria with the Chorus, exploring Berlin, Munich, and Vienna. She fostered a love of her German heritage and culture in her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Anna (Prockup) Bonekamp, her husband, Robert T. Skillman in 2006, her brother, Fred Bonekamp, and her sister, Anita Edmiston.

She is survived by her four children, Kathleen Zarzycki of Austintown, Susan (Zane) Good of Boardman, David (Linda) Skillman of Columbiana, and Barbara (Bud) Perkins of East Palestine. She also leaves behind three sisters-in-law, Marjorie Maderas and Carolyn Lucas of Zephyrhills, Florida and Claire Bonekamp of Fort Myers, Florida. Her memory lives on through her nine grandchildren Shannon, Matthew, Joshua, Sarah, Amanda, Jessica, Nicole, Chloe, and Margeaux, and six great-grandchildren, Alexus, Hannah, Alexis, Dominic, Giavonna, and David, along with another one due in July.

Lois was a beloved and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a generous and giving person, a kind soul to all who knew her, and she will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held in Lois's honor at the Forest Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 5400 Market St., Boardman, on Friday, May 22 at 11:00 a.m.

The family would like to thank the staff of Parkside and Hospice of the Valley for their excellent care, attention, and support. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
