Struthers - Lois J. Frank, passed away Friday afternoon, August 16, 2024 at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House.
Lois was born September 20, 1926 in Youngstown, Ohio, a daughter of the late William and Marie Benson Frank and was a lifelong resident of the Northside of Struthers.
After graduating from Struthers High School in 1944, Lois attended Thiel College in Greenville, PA, taking a two-year course and receiving an Associate Degree in Business Administration.
In 1946, she began working at The William B. Pollock Company, Youngstown, as secretary to its president, William B. Pollock II. After working over 37 years, Lois retired in 1983.
Lois was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Youngstown and later, she and her family became members of Martin Lutheran Church. A member for over 40 years, Lois taught Sunday School to the children and sang in the Chancel Choir.
In addition to her church, Lois was a member of The Butler Institute of American Art, the Saxon Club, Struthers Historical Society, Struthers Northside Reunion Committee, Monday Book Review Club, and the Birthday Lunch Bunch, meeting at various restaurants to celebrate birthdays.
Lois loved to travel and one of her most memorable trips was visiting her Grandma Benson's homeland in beautiful Varmland, Sweden. She enjoyed the Scandinavian countries of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, as well as visiting Hawaii, Bermuda, Mexico, Cuba, San Juan, Puerto Rico, and many of the states.
She also appreciated good music, attending many concerts at Stambaugh and Powers Auditoriums, the Youngstown Symphony, and the Cleveland Opera. Her other favorite pastimes were playing the piano with old time songs and hymns, shopping, taking care of her flower beds, and cooking and baking favorite family recipes.
Lois was very proud of her Swedish and German heritage, but was most proud of being an American and of her Struthers family roots. At one time, there were six Frank families, all living in a row on the North Bridge Street Hill. Because of being some of the earliest residents of Struthers, streets were named after the Frank family- Frank, Wilhelm, (meaning William in Germany) and Herman. Lois was the last of the Franks on Bridge Street living in the same house which her father and Uncle Bill had built in 1926.
Living many years, Lois was a happy person and young at heart, living life to the fullest and trying to keep active all her life by swimming, walking, skating, hiking, bowling, and watching football and baseball games. When asked the secret of her longevity, Lois would reply, "I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't even gamble, and I never got married!"
Besides her parents, Lois was preceded in death by her brother, Bill Frank, who passed away March 2007; and her cousin and dear friend, Norma Wagner Uray who was like a sister to her.
Services will be held Saturday, August 24, 2024, at 3:00 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home in Struthers with Pastor Jeremy Hollingshead officiating. Interment will follow Monday at the Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown.
