POLAND - Leonard J. Antal Sr., 77, passed away Wednesday morning, Feb. 23, 2011, at his residence after a courageous three year battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 26, 1933, in Youngstown, son of the late Paul and Mary (Shulay) Antal.
A 1951 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, he attended Youngstown University and was also an Army Korean War veteran.
He was a member of the Poland Knights of Columbus Council 4471, The Croatian Pensioners and First Catholic Slovak Union Branch 731.
He retired in 1996 from Canfield Metal Coating, the former Pittsburgh-Canfield Corporation after 32 years of service.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Martha (Baron) Antal, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage on Aug. 13, 2010; a daughter, Monica (Sam) Detwiler of Columbiana and their children Benjamin, Timothy and Andrea Detwiler; three sons, Len (Dr. Ivania) Antal of Canfield, Ron (Dr. Neera) Antal of Hudson and their children, Parker and Chandini Antal and Matt (Heidi) Antal of Mason and their children, Ashley and Aaron Antal.
He also leaves a sister, Florence Simunic of Austintown and a brother, Jerry Antal of Youngstown.
Leonard was kind and considerate and went out of his way to help friends and neighbors. He enjoyed gardening, yard work and working at Detwiler Farm during their Fall pumpkin and hayride activities. Leonard also enjoyed working the polls on Election Day.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at noon at the Holy Family Church in Poland.
Family and friends will be received Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home at 270 N. Main St. in Poland, where a prayer service will be held Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
