Houston - Leo Pekkanen, 91, of Houston, formerly of Poland, died Tuesday morning at Autumn Grove Cottage.
Leo was born August 14, 1921 in Youngstown, a son of Edwin and Alena Namie Pekkanen.
A life-long resident of Poland, Leo was a graduate of Poland Seminary High School. He worked as a Pipe Fitter for Panelmatic Inc.for over 30 years retiring in 1986. He was an avid bowler and golfer and was a member of the Poland Businessmen's Bowling League. Leo was a member of the Poland Presbyterian Church.
A Sergeant of the United States Army, Leo served during World War II from 1942-1945
His wife the former Vivian Korby whom he married September 3, 1949 died July 22,1995. He leaves two daughters, Kathy (Willis) Korb of Guysville, OH, and Amy (Mark) Spiegel of Alpharetta, GA; one son, Alan (Cindy) Pekkanen of Houston, TX; one sister, Elsa Metting of Spokane, WA; one brother, Walter Pekkanen of Poland; seven grandchildren, Kip, Holly and Kelly Korb, Allison and Kyle Pekkanen, and Alex and Garrett Spiegel.
Besides his parents and wife, Leo was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill and George Pekkanen; and three sisters, Sylvia Stoner, Gertrude Elder, and Elma Ramsey.
Funeral services will be held at Monday 11 a.m.at Poland Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Gilbert officiating. Interment will follow at the Poland Riverside Cemetery.
Friends will be received Sunday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, Poland and Monday 10-10:45a.m. at the church.
