New Bedford- Leo Nelson Birkheimer, 84, died Wednesday afternoon at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Leo was born September 5, 1925 in Little, West Virginia, a son of Lindsey and Greta Franks Birkheimer. He was raised in Little, West Virginia and moved to New Bedford in 1957.
A United States Navy Veteran, Leo served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
Leo worked as a millwright for Commercial Shearing and Stamping for over 33 years retiring in 1987. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed spending time at his hunting cabin in Venango County in PA and his cottage at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
Besides his wife, the former Dorothy Holliday, whom he married September 21, 1946 he leaves two daughters, Linda (Richard) Melvin of Struthers and Carol Connor of Topeka, KS; one son, Nelson (Leann) Birkheimer of Warren; two sisters, Laura Cline and Opal Beach both of East Liverpool; one brother, Gail Cline of FL; five grandchildren, Carrie Drovdlic, Mike Pogozelec, Elizabeth Birkheimer, Samantha Koski, and Kenny Gosnel; and nine great-grandchildren, Matthew, Nathaniel and Kathryn Drovdlic, Jonathon, Nathan, Sean, and Brandon Koski, and Alex Pogozelec.
Besides his parents, Leo was preceded in death by six brothers, Pete Wheeler, Glenn, Paul, Ralph, Vernon, and Paul Cline; and two sisters, Rosalie and Cora Bell Cline.
Services will be held Saturday, 3:00 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers. Friends will be received Saturday from 1:00 PM until 2:45 PM at the funeral home.
