Lena Douglas, 93 Lorain- Lena Douglas, 93, of Hearthstone Assisted Living, formerly of Como Street, Struthers, Ohio, died Sunday afternoon at the New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain. Mrs. Douglas was born November 20, 1909 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Inace and Mary Lesko Severyn. She was raised in Salem and moved to Struthers as a young woman. She graduated from Salem High School and received her cadet teaching degree from Kent State University. She was an elementary teacher for Struthers City Schools, teaching first grade at Fifth Street School. She retired in 1980 after more than 40 years of teaching. Mrs. Douglas was a member of the Struthers Presbyterian Church, the Struthers Education Association and Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She loved playing bridge and and gardening. After retiring, at the age of 70, she took up golf. Her husband Robert whom she married in October 1933 died May 6, 1960. She leaves one daughter, Barbara (Robert) Shelar of Elyria; one sister, Betty Jane Scully of British Columbia; one brother, Gus Severyn of Salem; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One daughter, Beverly Gallo, three sisters Virginia Klein, Lucille Severyn, Josephine Neiheisel and two brothers, Mitchell and Henry Severyn preceded her in death. Private memorial services will be Saturday at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers. The family requests that memorial tributes if desired take the form of contributions to New Life Hospice Center of St Joseph, 5255 N. Abbe Rd., Elyria, Ohio 44035 or to the Struthers Presbyterian Church, 110 Poland Ave., Struthers, Ohio 44471.
