LaVerne Ellen Cox

August 23, 1920 — March 18, 2013

Struthers - LaVerne Ellen Cox, 92, of Struthers, died Monday evening at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House.

LaVerne, affectionately known as Sal and Grandma, was born August 23, 1920 in Akron, an only child of William and Alta Webster DeGroff.

She was raised in Struthers and graduated in June of 1938 from Struthers High School. During WWII LaVerne worked at the Ravenna Arsenal. From 1960 to 1968 she worked at Wittenauer's in Struthers and later as a manager for Memory Lane Card and Gift Shop where she retired in July of 1979.

In 1931, at the age of 11, LaVerne joined the Struthers United Methodist Church. At the age of 16, Laverne joined the choir and accepted Christ into her life at the Lakeside Institute. She was a faithful member of their weekly Bible Study, and she served on numerous boards including President of United Methodist Women and currently serving as Lay Leader. LaVerne was the first female President of St. Nicholas Senior Citizens who was not of the Catholic faith. She was also President of AARP Chapter 3105 and a member of 1418 Auxiliary Seniors.

LaVerne loved the perfume "Red Door", the color peach, playing cards with her friends, and eating out at her favorite restaurants. LaVerne was a very generous person. She always had time for people, whether it was helping them, listening to them or sending greeting cards to let people know she was thinking of them. LaVerne was a strong supporter of World Vision's efforts to provide fresh water for those in need. Even though her health was failing, LaVerne was sharp as a whip, spirited, and kept her great sense of wit.

Her husband James Cox whom she married January 15, 1941 died September 5, 1982. She leaves one daughter, Reverend Coralee Cox of Alliance; one daughter-in-law, Cheryl Cox; one grandson, James (Megan) Cox III of Farmington, MN; and four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Aubrie, Sabrina, and Kadence.

Besides her parents and husband, LaVerne was preceded in death by her son, Dr. James Cox Jr.
