BOARDMAN - Kathryn M. Walker, longtime resident of Boardman, passed away June 28, 2013, at the age of 92.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Dr. Mark F. Walker, and by two daughters, Sara Kay Walker and Susan Walker Vitullo.
She is survived by her brother, George Howard McCain of Painesville; and three daughters, Jane W. Hallett and her husband, Win of Tucson, Ariz., Harriett J. Walker of Las Vegas, and Ellen Kim and her husband, Young-Nam of St. Paul, Minnesota. She was the much-loved grandmother of 11: Beth, Julie, Ben, Nikos, Ellen, Erika, Ariana, Nathan, Daniel, Andrea and Sara, and great-grandmother of seven.
Professional musician and consummate violin teacher, Kathryn received her B.A. in violin performance from Jordan Conservatory of Music at Butler University. She played with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Warren Chamber Orchestra, and was a member of the Youngstown Symphony for 32 years, many of those as principal second violin. Kathryn also performed in many other orchestras and chamber music ensembles throughout the Northeast Ohio area.
Kathryn taught countless violin and viola students in a career spanning 75 years, beginning in Indianapolis and continuing in Columbus, before moving to Boardman. She will be remembered by hundreds of her students who attended the Boardman schools. She was repeatedly recognized for her achievement by the Boardman High School Music Department, and also by the American String Teachers Association. In addition, a cherished achievement for Kathryn was that all her children and grandchildren continued her legacy by becoming performing musicians.
A memorial service will be held at a future time when friends and family can gather, at the Boardman United Methodist Church. Details will be announced. Burial was private.
