STRUTHERS - Katherine Makovec, 92, died Dec. 8, 2014, at Hospice House.
Mrs. Makovec was born March 22, 1922, in Campbell, a daughter of George and Helena Saganich Madick.
She was a 1940 graduate of Campbell Memorial High School. During World War II she was employed at Youngstown Sheet & Tube in the pipe department. She later worked at McKelvey's Department Store for many years as an elevator operator and in sales.
Katherine was a very loving, caring and nurturing wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She always made sure everyone had enough to eat. She was kind and generous to everyone she met and put their needs before her own.
Katherine was elegant and graceful, and had an impeccable sense of style. She displayed a strength that was an inspiration to all of us. She greeted everyone with her beautiful smile and conducted herself with dignity and class.
Katherine was a member of the Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Catholic Ladies Association, as well as several card clubs. She loved to play the lottery and visit casinos.
Her husband, Michael, whom she married Oct. 30, 1941, died Feb. 27, 1991.
She is survived by two daughters, Georgieanne M. (Terry) Abrams of Struthers and Marsha (Edward) Sulik of Poland; five grandchildren, Louis J. (Milissa) DeLuca, Anthony M. (Phoebe) DeLuca, Keith (Betty) Abrams, Kimberly (Louis) Giustini, and Kristopher Abrams and his companion Kelly Campbell; nine great-grandchildren, Harrison DeLuca, Audrey and David DeLuca, Kelsey, Maggie, and Allison Abrams, Francesca, Alexander, and Sophia Giustini; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband and parents, Katherine was preceded in death by one sister, Anne Copp; four brothers, Michael, Stephen, Frank, and George Madick; and two nephews, John Skocic and Stephen G. Madick.
A prayer service will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at the Christ Our Savior Parish at St. Nicholas. Interment will follow at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery.
Friends and family will be received Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Evan and Dr. and Mrs. Walter Paladino, St. Elizabeth Health Center in Boardman doctors, nurses, aides, and housekeepers, Select Specialty Hospital, Masternick Memorial Rehab Center, and the Hospice House for their excellent care of Katherine.
