June A. Lomax

Poland - June A. (Jugenheimer) Lomax, 91, passed away Monday morning, April 7, 2014 at 4:40 am at Heritage Manor following a brief illness.
June was born November 2, 1922 in Lisbon, Ohio, a daughter of Lloyd and Ruth Moncrief Jugenheimer.
June graduated from Scienceville High School in 1940 and from St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She was then an instructor in nursing arts while attending Youngstown College in the evenings. June enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps in 1944, and was stationed at Billings General Hospital at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana, where she earned the rank of First Lieutenant. June was transferred to England, where she cared for prisoners of war as well as American servicemen. She was then transferred to France where she was assigned to the American Hospital in Nice.
It was in Nice, that she was reunited with her fiancé, Corporal William (Bud) Lomax, Jr. They were married on October 23, 1945, at the American Episcopal Church in Nice and lived in Hotel Negresco until their discharge in 1946. Post war, she attended Miami University.
The next few years were devoted to her family with the births of daughters Sondra, Pamela and son William III. June's service endeavors while her family was young included leading two Girl Scout and one Boy Scout troop, serving as secretary of Poland School PTO, president of Poland Quest Club, president of Council of Junior Clubs and secretary to the Widowed Person Service Club.
June returned to work at St. Elizabeth Hospital in the capacity of Director of Volunteers in 1969. She retired from this position in 1986. It should be noted that she enjoyed working with her outstanding volunteers, especially her beloved volunteens. Upon retiring June was asked to serve on St. Elizabeth's Hospital Home Health Services Committee which she gladly did for the next five years.
June's volunteer experiences included being involved with The American Red Cross Organization, a group whom she held in the highest esteem. She was a longtime volunteer for this group having been awarded a twenty-year service pin. She gave of her time for this group by teaching courses in mother and baby care and home nursing. June also received a twenty year pin as a R.S.V.P. volunteer. She spent 30 years volunteering for Neighborhood Ministries. During this time she served on the board for two terms, including two terms as president of the board. She was also a member of Neighborhood Ministries Personnel Committee for years. She served on the GEMS volunteer committee and volunteered for a variety of activities while in that group.
She was a member of Western Reserve Baptist Church in Youngstown and Boardman for 50 years where she taught Sunday School, served as a Deaconess, on the Board of Christian Education, President of Ambassadors Mission Group and organized a Shut-In visitor program. It was her work with the Shut-In visitor program which lead to her being honored as "Person of the Year" in 1997.
June loved her family, her church and her country. Her past times included traveling, quilting, swimming, gardening and working crossword and jigsaw puzzles. June most certainly did not enjoy cooking!
She is survived by two children, Sondra (Tom) Foley of Barrington, IL, William (Ann) Lomax III of Longmont, CO, son-in-law, Joe Sulka; and three grandchildren, Michele Sulka of Westminster, CO., Brendt "BJ" Sulka of Poland and Lucy Lomax of Longmont, CO. She also leaves her sister, Betty Wallace of Bedford, PA; also many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, June was preceded in death by her daughter, Pamela Sulka and her brother, Paul Jugenheimer.
The family would also like to extend a special thanks to June's biggest fans and support group which consisted of her friends, neighbors, most especially Shawn Phillips and her caregivers Brittany, Marcia, Becky and Molly. We particularly want to thank Maureen Schick for her longtime friendship,exceptional care and being her devoted companion. June especially enjoyed visitations with her dog Angel.
A celebration of June's life will be held at 11am on Saturday April 12th at Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland.
Friends will be received Friday from 5-7:00 pm at the funeral home and from 10-10:45 am on Saturday.
